Franklin County Commission Candidates Discuss Issues and Changes
As the election for Franklin County’s new five commission districts approaches on Nov. 5, two candidates are standing out with their responses to important issues facing the county. Thomas Skolfield is running for a four-year term in District 3, while Commissioner Robert Carlton is seeking a two-year term in District 4.
When asked about the most important issue facing Franklin County, Carlton highlighted housing as a significant concern, noting the challenges faced by younger residents in finding affordable homes. Skolfield pointed to the overall economy as a pressing issue, emphasizing the need for government action to alleviate the stress of low incomes and high costs on the county’s citizens.
Both candidates also discussed potential changes at the county level if elected. Carlton mentioned the ongoing work on a strategic plan that will provide direction for the commissioners moving forward, while Skolfield emphasized the importance of transparency in county government to ensure accountability, efficiency, and fairness.
On the topic of setting commissioners’ salaries, both candidates recognized the authority of the commissioners to make those decisions. Carlton acknowledged the role of the Budget Committee in providing recommendations, while Skolfield emphasized the accountability of the commissioners to the citizens who elect them.
District 3 includes a number of towns and townships, while District 4 covers several municipalities as well. Residents in these districts will have the opportunity to cast their votes and have a say in the future direction of Franklin County.
