Myanmar’s military coup leaders, facing pressure from their opponents, have called for political dialogue and urged armed groups to lay down their weapons in a surprise move that was quickly rejected. The State Administration Council (SAC) encouraged ethnic armed groups and People’s Defence Forces to abandon the “terrorist way” and engage in talks. However, the National Unity Government (NUG) dismissed the offer, with spokesperson Nay Phone Latt stating it was not worth considering. The NUG, which includes elected lawmakers removed in the coup, established the PDFs in response to the military crackdown on protests. The military has been accused of killing thousands since the coup and detaining thousands more.
The generals, who seized power in 2021, have promised new elections and presented the offer for talks as part of their election preparations. However, civil society groups have labeled the upcoming elections as a sham and criticized the military’s attempts to gain legitimacy.
