North Macedonia criticizes European Union for slow progress on accession, compares process to “Waiting for Godot”

North Macedonia’s president and prime minister have criticized the European Union for imposing hurdles on the country’s accession bid due to a dispute with Bulgaria over Balkan history, language, and culture. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed frustration at the EU’s attempts to dictate terms to North Macedonia and insisted on no further delays in the membership talks. Reports suggest that EU ambassadors have decided to separate North Macedonia’s accession process from Albania’s, even though the two bids had been progressing together.

The EU started membership talks with both Balkan countries in 2022 but the process has been delayed due to the dispute with Bulgaria. North Macedonia’s previous government had agreed to insert a reference to a Bulgarian ethnic minority in the country’s constitution to break the impasse, but Mickoski’s new conservative government is now demanding approval from Bulgaria for North Macedonia’s EU membership before making any changes.

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova compared North Macedonia’s EU membership path to waiting for Godot at the UN General Assembly. The country’s EU path had previously been blocked by Greece over a dispute regarding the country’s name, which was settled in 2018. However, the main opposition leader, Venko Filipche, blamed Mickoski’s government for the new setback and called it a disaster for the citizens and future generations. The dispute with Bulgaria continues to be a major stumbling block for North Macedonia’s EU accession.
