In a thrilling rain-soaked football game on Thursday night, Old Town rallied from a 24-0 deficit to defeat John Bapst 40-27. The Crusaders mounted a comeback in the second half, scoring three unanswered touchdowns to make it a close 24-21 game. However, Old Town’s sophomore quarterback Ethan Closson sealed the victory with an 87-yard kickoff return touchdown, his first career return. Junior Ben King also contributed with a 20-yard touchdown run to help secure the win. The game was originally set to be played at Old Town High School but was moved to Hermon’s Pottle Field due to muddy conditions.
The victory improved Old Town’s record to 2-2 on the season, while John Bapst fell to 1-3. Senior running back Elijah Alston led Old Town with 159 yards rushing, one touchdown, and four two-point conversions. The win was particularly sweet for Old Town, as it avenged their regional semifinal loss to John Bapst last year.
Old Town’s Donovan Davis praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We got slapped in the third quarter, but we came back and slapped them even harder. We stuck together.” The team’s incredible comeback and show of teamwork will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most exciting games of the season.
