Safe Voices, a domestic abuse and sex trafficking resource center serving Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties, is gearing up to hold two candlelit vigils in Farmington and Lewiston on Monday, Oct. 7, in honor of Domestic Violence Action Month. The vigils, which will start at 6 p.m. in Dufresne Plaza and Meeting House Park, will commemorate those who have lost their lives to domestic abuse and violence, offer hope to those still facing abuse, and support survivors.
The event will include guest speakers from the community, survivor stories, and a remembrance ceremony, with all members of the community encouraged to attend and show their support. Domestic abuse and violence are not just individual issues but community concerns, and Safe Voices is calling on friends and neighbors to come together to demonstrate that efforts to end abuse must be a collective endeavor.
Last year, Safe Voices worked with 2,318 unique survivors in the three counties it serves, providing support with safety planning, shelter access, legal advocacy, and crisis intervention. The agency has been dedicated to this work since 1977 and is urging those impacted by domestic abuse to reach out for help through its 24-hour helpline at 1-800-559-2927.
For more information about the upcoming vigils or to get involved in Safe Voices’ efforts, contact Marie Lane at mlane@safevoices.org or 207-795-6744 ext. 204. Join the community in showing solidarity and support for survivors of domestic abuse during this important month of awareness and action.
