European Union’s Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell has warned of a “full-blown war” in the Middle East as Israel launched air strikes on Hezbollah’s headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon. Borrell expressed regret that no power seemed able to stop Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who appeared determined to crush militants in Lebanon and Gaza. The strike on Hezbollah’s headquarters resulted in at least two deaths and dozens of injuries, escalating tensions in the region.
The Israeli military’s intensified airstrikes in Lebanon this week aimed to eliminate senior Hezbollah leadership. Netanyahu abruptly cut short his visit to the United States, highlighting the significance of the strike. Iran condemned the attack, warning of appropriate punishment for Israel’s actions. Despite this, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian suggested that Tehran was not seeking further escalation in the region.
The strikes come amid ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with daily cross-border fire exchanges since last October. Israel’s goal is to end Hezbollah’s attacks into its territory, which have resulted in the deaths of over 720 people in Lebanon, including women and children. Israel has hinted at a possible ground invasion to push Hezbollah away from the border, with troops being moved towards the area as a precaution.
This recent escalation raises concerns about the potential for a wider conflict in the Middle East. Borrell’s warning and the continued airstrikes emphasize the volatile situation in the region and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to prevent further violence and loss of life.
