The Israeli army has confirmed the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a targeted strike in Beirut. Nasrallah, who led the Iran-backed militant group for 32 years, was responsible for numerous terrorist activities around the world. The Israeli military’s announcement marks a significant escalation in the conflict with Hezbollah, as Israel previously refrained from assassinating senior group leaders. Nasrallah’s death comes after Israel’s recent targeting of several senior Hezbollah members.
Following Nasrallah’s killing, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been moved to a secure location within Iran under heightened security. Iran has long supported Hezbollah, and is currently consulting with the Lebanese militant group to determine their next steps. In response to the escalating conflict, British nationals in Lebanon have been advised to leave the country immediately.
The Israeli military has also carried out extensive strikes against Hezbollah targets in the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon. The airstrikes targeted buildings storing weapons and locations used to launch rockets into Israel. Thousands of Beirut residents have fled their homes to escape Israeli attacks, with many seeking refuge in public spaces like Martyrs’ Square. The situation remains tense in the region as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues to escalate.
