Nepal floods and landslides leave at least 32 dead, 12 missing | Climate Crisis Updates

Nepal deploys over 3,000 security personnel to assist in rescue efforts following deadly floods and landslides caused by incessant rains. At least 32 people have been killed and 12 missing as parts of the country, including the capital Kathmandu, have been inundated. Authorities warn of more possible flash floods in multiple rivers as monsoon rains continue. Domestic flights out of Kathmandu have been cancelled, affecting over 150 departures, while international flights are still operating. Police are working to clear debris and reopen roads to traffic after landslides blocked highways at 28 locations. Weather officials predict the rains may not end until Sunday, blaming a low-pressure system over parts of neighboring India. The Koshi River, which often causes deadly floods in India’s Bihar state, is running above the danger level in Nepal. Experts attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of rain-related disasters to climate change, with more than 170 people already killed this year. The devastating floods and landslides are a reminder of the annual challenges faced by Nepal during the monsoon season.
