Madison Officials Considering Purchase of Building for Treatment Center


Madison town officials are considering purchasing a property that was previously eyed by a behavioral health provider for a treatment center. The property, located at 2 Old Point Ave., was originally targeted by Acadia Healthcare to open a clinic offering substance use disorder treatments. However, after concerns from over 200 residents, the town is now exploring the option to buy the property themselves. A special town meeting is scheduled for October 22 to discuss the potential acquisition and other related ordinances.

Town Manager Denise Ducharme stated that the town has no specific plans for the property if purchased, but an environmental study is currently underway to inform future decisions. The asking price for the property is $595,000 and the town has not participated in negotiations with the current owner, Larry R. Caldwell. Despite the property being taken off the tax rolls, Ducharme believes it will not have a substantial impact on town revenue.

Acadia Healthcare has since expressed disinterest in purchasing the property and is considering other locations within Madison that align with the proposed ordinance. The ordinance, approved by both the Planning Board and Board of Selectmen, restricts the locations of outpatient substance use disorder treatment programs to specific areas within the town.

The town officials are responding to the concerns of the public and seeking a solution that maintains the safety and security of the town. While a lawsuit by the property owner is a possibility, it has not deterred the town from considering the purchase. The decision to potentially buy the property aligns with the town’s goal of addressing community feedback and ensuring the well-being of its residents.
