A devastating wildfire in Greece’s Corinthia region has killed two people and injured dozens, prompting a massive response from hundreds of firefighters and volunteers. The fire, which has been burning for three days, has ravaged a large forested area and led to assistance from other European Union countries such as Croatia and Italy.
More than 400 firefighters and 22 aircraft are currently battling the blaze in the rugged mountains of Corinthia, as Greece faces an unprecedented wildfire season that started earlier than usual in April. With a total of 41 wildfires breaking out across the country in the past 24 hours, this week’s fire is considered one of the most difficult to tackle this season.
Local residents are experiencing desperation as they witness the destruction caused by the wildfire, with one resident comparing it to wildfires in the year 2000 that caused widespread devastation. Greece, like other southern European countries, experiences destructive wildfires every summer, exacerbated by global warming.
This year’s fire season has been particularly severe as a result of a protracted drought and early summer heatwaves, making it the most dangerous season in two decades. The Greek fire service has had to deal with over 4,500 wildfires in the past few months, highlighting the urgent need for continued efforts to combat these devastating natural disasters.
