Poetry of War and Hope: The Ukrainian Perspective

The Summer 2024 issue of Café Review, guest edited by Anna Halberstadt and Philip Nikolayev, is dedicated to showcasing the works of Ukrainian poets and artists trying to make sense of the war and chaos in their country. In the midst of Russia’s invasion, Ukrainians struggle to comprehend the unimaginable horrors of war and find themselves fighting for their lives and country. The magazine features poems and visual artwork that express a range of emotions, from grief and anger to confusion and hope. The works depict the pain and suffering inflicted by the war, but also offer glimpses of light and resilience in the face of darkness. The publication aims to shed light on the reality of the situation in Ukraine and provide a platform for Ukrainian voices to be heard and understood.

The issue is a reflection of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the personal experiences of those affected by it. It offers a raw and honest portrayal of the emotional toll of war and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. The magazine is not intended as light reading but rather as a poignant and important reflection of the reality of the situation in Ukraine. Copies of the magazine are available for purchase through the Café Review website or at Yes Books in Portland, Maine.
