A Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy shot a man in Stonington after a confrontation where the man allegedly drew a gun on Saturday. The incident occurred after a woman called the police reporting that her adult son, Erik-Thor Himpler, was threatening to burn down their house. Deputy John Stanley responded to the call and found Himpler walking on the road. Despite orders to stop, Himpler raised a gun from his waistband, prompting Deputy Stanley to shoot him. Himpler received medical assistance from the officers present and was taken to Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital before being transferred to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Fortunately, his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
As per standard procedure, Deputy Stanley will be placed on administrative leave while the Office of the Attorney General investigates his use of deadly force. The incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face in responding to emergency situations. The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office commends Deputy Stanley for his quick actions to protect himself and others in the face of a potentially life-threatening situation. Further updates on Himpler’s condition and the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
