Israel’s ground offensive broadens in Lebanon while explosions persist in Beirut

Israel is intensifying its efforts to drive Hezbollah away from the border to allow thousands of displaced Israelis to return home after months of cross-border fire. The Israeli military has expanded its bombardment in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah and Hamas fighters in Beirut’s southern suburbs and also striking a Palestinian refugee camp in the north. The IDF confirmed striking targets near Beirut and intercepting projectiles that crossed into Israeli territory. Since the start of the ground operation, Israeli forces have killed 440 Hezbollah militants and destroyed over 2,000 targets. The IDF also discovered and dismantled a 250-meter long tunnel in southern Lebanon that Hezbollah had intended to use to enter Israeli territory. Israeli strikes targeted buildings in Beirut, including the main intelligence headquarters of Hezbollah. In response, Hezbollah claimed to have targeted Israeli soldiers near a settlement in northern Israel, but the IDF made no statement regarding the alleged attack. The Israeli attack on the Beddawi camp in Lebanon killed a Hamas official and his family, as well as another member of Hamas’ military wing in the Bekaa Valley. Israel aims to push Hezbollah away from the border, where militants have been firing rockets into Israeli territory in support of Hamas during the ongoing conflict. At least 1,400 Lebanese have been killed and 1.2 million displaced as a result of the violence.
