Biddefen lawmaker selected to serve as speaker of the Maine House

Rep.-elect Ryan Fecteau, D-Biddford, has been chosen as the next Speaker of the House by House Democrats in Augusta. The 32-year-old previously served as speaker from 2020-22 but could not seek reelection due to term limits. Fecteau expressed mixed emotions about the 2024 elections, acknowledging the challenges posed by national results and the Republican takeover of the U.S. Senate. As the incoming Speaker, Fecteau aims to focus on protecting individual freedom and addressing issues that people care about.

Fecteau, who currently works as a housing adviser, plans to build trust with Republicans and ensure everyone feels heard and respected in the legislative process. With Democrats holding a slim majority in the House, Fecteau emphasized the importance of addressing pocketbook issues, including the housing crunch, childcare affordability, and climate change, despite limited federal funding under Republican control in Washington.

During his previous term as speaker, Fecteau was known for running a tight ship and ensuring efficient movement of bills through the legislative process. He plans to prioritize productive results for the people of Maine in his upcoming term as Speaker. Rep. Matt Moonen was chosen as majority leader and Rep. Lori Gramlich as assistant majority leader.

Democrats expect to hold 77 seats in the 151-seat House, with Republicans holding 72 seats and one race currently tied. Fecteau’s appointment as Speaker signals a desire for unity and collaboration across party lines to address key challenges facing Maine communities.
