The University of Maine Cohen Institute Emerging Leaders Summer High School Program has received a $25,000 grant from Amazon to support costs associated with student participation. The program, part of the Cohen Institute for Leadership & Public Service, aims to develop leadership skills in high school students for potential careers in public service. Since its inception in 2019, the program has welcomed over 150 rising high school seniors from across Maine, with key leaders such as former Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins sharing insights on leadership.
The initiative trains the next generation of Maine’s public service leaders and connects high school students with UMaine, the state’s only R1 institution. Students are nominated by their high schools and can participate tuition-free, with room and board covered by donors. The program also serves as a capstone experience for UMaine’s Early College Leadership and Public Service pathway.
The Cohen Institute models and promotes leadership and public service, honoring the legacy of Maine’s influential leaders. The University of Maine Foundation, which secured the grant from Amazon, supports the university’s mission of teaching, research, and public service through private gifts. As Maine’s flagship institution, UMaine offers a wide range of degree programs and fosters an environment to create tomorrow’s leaders.
