Climbing to the peak of Tunk Mountain presents obstacles

Ron Chase and his son Adam had an adventurous surf and turf trip at Donnell Pond in late October. After kayaking, camping, and climbing Caribou Mountain on the first day, they decided to tackle Tunk Mountain on the second day. They paddled back across the pond and hiked to the summit, encountering challenging terrain and breathtaking views along the way.

The duo had to navigate through dense fog before setting out on the calm waters of Donnell Pond, making their way to the Tunk Mountain Trailhead. The hike took them through mixed hardwood and conifer forests, past hidden ponds, and up steep ledges to the summit. Facing vertiginous cliffs and boulders, they were assisted by iron rungs before reaching the top.

Despite encountering other hikers and some turning back due to the intimidating terrain, Ron and Adam persevered and were rewarded with stunning views from the summit. The decision to climb Tunk Mountain instead of Schoodic Mountain proved to be a memorable and rewarding experience.

In Ron’s book, “Maine Al Fresco: The Fifty Finest Outdoor Adventures in Maine,” he shares more thrilling surf and turf trips and mountain hikes in the region. The father-son duo’s escapade serves as a reminder of the beauty and challenges that Maine’s wilderness has to offer, encouraging others to explore and discover the wonders of the outdoors.
