An inspection at Lee Residential Care in Hampden, Maine in March 2022 revealed shocking findings, including a spongy bathroom floor with moisture seeping between planks, inadequate furniture, incomplete contracts, and dangerous utility conditions. These revelations shed light on the abusive conditions residents faced at the facility, where four men were charged with torture.
The inspections highlighted a lack of management experience and failure to meet state standards, prompting concerns from experts about the quality of care provided. Issues like excessively hot water, urine-soaked bathroom vanities, and missing amenities like bedside tables were also reported in the inspection findings.
Lori Smetanka of the National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care emphasized the importance of holding facility owners accountable for meeting standards and ensuring resident safety. Failure to comply with documentation and assessment requirements may indicate a lack of management competence, potentially jeopardizing resident well-being.
Lee Residential Care surrendered its licenses voluntarily in February 2023, leading to the cessation of inspection reports. However, recent legislation will require all residential care facilities to be licensed, regardless of size, in order to receive MaineCare reimbursements. This change aims to improve oversight and prevent future abuses like those experienced by residents at Lee Residential Care.
The employees involved in the abuse have faced criminal charges, with some already sentenced to prison. Officials from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services have expressed grave concern over the situation and are taking steps to address the failures in care observed at the facility.
