A 25-year-old man named Shubham Upadhyay was arrested for allegedly posting bomb threat messages to a flight at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The threat messages were received via email and were found to be a hoax after immediate action was taken. Upadhyay, who is unemployed and a Class 12 pass out, admitted to sending the messages to draw attention after seeing similar news reports on television. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law and an investigation is ongoing.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation is working on making amendments to existing laws to deal with hoax bomb threats more effectively. The accused person is likely to be put on a no-fly list, and the government is planning to introduce stricter penalties, including a 5-year imprisonment, for offenders. This decision comes after a series of bomb threats were received by several airlines in India in the past four days.
The police have also sought details from social media platforms in an attempt to trace the origin of the threatening messages. Amidst these incidents, the Information and Technology Ministry has requested social media platforms to promptly remove or disable access to any misinformation related to bomb threats according to the IT rules. The government is aiming to deter such threats and ensure the safety of passengers and flights in the country.
