Former RPI candidate Greg Carvel visits Houston Field House this weekend as coach of Maine hockey
Greg Bar, former RPI coaching candidate, will be returning to Houston Field House this weekend, but this time as the head coach of the Maine men’s hockey team. Despite his previous ties to RPI, Bar downplays the significance of his return, focusing instead on the success of his team. In his fourth season as head coach, Bar has led the Black Bears to an impressive 8-2-2 record and a top-five ranking in college hockey polls.
Bar’s coaching journey took a different turn when RPI chose to hire Dave Smith over him in 2017. Bar went on to find success at UMass, helping them win an NCAA title in 2021 before taking over at Maine. While the RPI decision was disappointing, Bar remains grateful for the opportunities he has had in coaching.
Maine captain Lynden Breen believes Bar will have a personal motivation to win at RPI, despite the coach’s outward focus on the team’s performance. As Bar leads the Black Bears into this weekend’s series against RPI, fans can expect an exciting matchup between two competitive programs.
In other hockey news, the Union women’s team earned a key victory over RPI, surpassing their previous season’s ECACH win total. This weekend, the Union men’s team will face a tough test against Niagara, while other ECAC Hockey teams continue to battle for the top spots in the league.
