Maine Families Embrace Tradition by Visiting Local Farms on ‘Maine Grown Christmas Tree Day’

Families across Maine participated in the beloved tradition of selecting the perfect Christmas tree from local farms this holiday season. The crowds were large at Old Farm Christmas Place in Cape Elizabeth, as Governor Janet Mills declared Friday as “Maine-Grown Christmas Tree Day” in support of the state’s tree and wreath industry. The industry contributes $18 million to Maine’s economy annually and provides 800 jobs.

Families braved the task of cutting down their chosen tree, with some finding it more challenging than others. Despite the physical effort, the joy of bringing home a fresh Christmas tree and decorating it with loved ones made it all worth it. Many families enjoyed the festive atmosphere and indulged in hot cocoa and roasted marshmallows as they finished up their day at the tree farm.

For Stig Smith and Richard Campbell of South Portland, the tree-cutting experience was a cherished tradition, with Campbell noting that even though it was a bit rustic, he was confident it would look beautiful once decorated. Overall, the holiday tree shopping experience at local farms was a memorable and heartwarming way for Maine families to kick off the holiday season and bring the Christmas spirit home.
