Maine sees record voter turnout in 2024 election
A record number of Maine voters cast their ballots in the 2024 election, with a total of 842,447 people participating in both the presidential and U.S. Senate races, according to the Maine Department of the Secretary of State. This high voter turnout was likely fueled by a high-stakes presidential race and reflects strong voter turnout levels across the country this year.
Secretary of State Shenna Bellows stated that it is too early to determine the official turnout rate, as all the numbers from clerks regarding voter participation history and registrations have not yet been collected. However, based on the number of ballots cast, it seems like it was another huge year for voter turnout in Maine.
In 2022, 680,909 Maine voters participated in the elections, while in the 2020 presidential race, 822,534 Maine voters cast their ballots. The United States Election Assistance Commission reported that Maine had the highest voter turnout in the country in 2022, both among active registered voters and the population of citizens of voting age.
Bellows emphasized that Maine should be proud of its consistently high voter participation levels and noted that the state has regularly ranked at the top of the nation in voter turnout. The 2024 election turnout in Maine further solidifies this trend.
Overall, this year’s election turnout across the country appeared to rival the historic levels seen in the 2020 election, which had the highest voter turnout since women were granted the right to vote over a century ago. Maine’s online voter registration system and same-day voter registration at polls also contributed to the high turnout observed in the 2024 election.
