Five scammers have been found guilty of orchestrating the largest benefit fraud scheme in the UK, swindling the government of over £53 million in Universal Credit claims. The gang, including mastermind Galina Nikolova, operated out of three corner shops in north London, using fake documents and stolen identities to make fraudulent claims. The group’s sophisticated scheme involved creating fake identities and forged documents to support their claims. They even went as far as transporting individuals from Bulgaria to London to make the claims.
After a two-year investigation, authorities uncovered £750,000 in cash hidden at Nikolova’s property, along with luxury cars, designer goods, and hundreds of forged claim packs. The gang members pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges and have been sentenced to a total of over 25 years in prison.
The case of Britain’s Biggest Benefit Scam is featured in an episode of the BBC series Scams & Scandals, which delves into the methods and investigation leading to their arrest. The episode highlights the impact of their actions on society and airs on BBC Two on November 27, 2024. The true crime documentary sheds light on the elaborate and extensive operation carried out by the gang, exposing the lengths they went to in order to defraud the government of millions of pounds.
