City plans to close Bangor homeless camp, but 50 people still reside on site.

A large homeless encampment in Bangor, Maine, is in the process of being closed by the end of the year, with many residents already transitioning into permanent housing. As of November, over 15 people have moved into permanent housing, with additional residents signing leases for apartments and being connected with family or shelters. However, approximately 50 more individuals still need to find housing or a plan for what to do next before the encampment closes on December 31.

While progress has been made in housing residents, some city councilors are concerned about the Dec. 31 closure deadline, fearing that it may break trust with those hesitant to accept help and could lead to the formation of new encampments elsewhere. Medical professionals from Penobscot Community Health Care are also providing care to residents, including wound treatment and vaccinations for pets.

To aid in the process of transitioning residents into housing, the city of Bangor has been awarded a $350,000 grant to establish a Housing Navigator and Stabilization Pilot Program. This program will fund a new position to help residents remain housed, provide necessary documents for housing applications, transportation, professional moving services, and basic home furnishings for those moving into apartments. City councilors are expected to formally accept the grant in an upcoming meeting to continue efforts in supporting homeless individuals in the community.
