Tanzania and Finland Universities Collaborate on Advancing Geospatial ICT

Leading universities in Tanzania and Finland are currently in discussions to renew their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of the Geospatial-ICT technologies (GeoICT4e) project. The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) and Turku University in Finland have already signed the new deal, with Ardhi University (ARU) and Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in the final stages of preparing to sign their respective MoUs.

ARU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof Evaristo Liwa, is optimistic about the discussions, highlighting the potential for mutual benefits and strengthening bilateral relationships between the two countries. The collaboration aims to reshape the educational landscape, focusing on innovative and scalable learning and research solutions for students and academic staff.

The current phase of the GeoICT4e project is set to conclude in August 2024, with ongoing discussions poised to take the collaboration to a higher level. The initial collaboration with the University of Turku began in 2018, leading to the GeoICT4e consortium after a successful first project in 2020.

Various activities under the GeoICT4e project, including the Multicompetence Learning challenge (MCL), have been successfully implemented by Ardhi University, UDSM, SUA, MoCU, and SUZA. The discussions involved the participation of chancellors and rectors from both Tanzanian and Finnish universities, emphasizing the importance of reshaping the educational landscape through collaborative efforts in teaching and learning.

Prof Jukka Kola from the University of Turku highlighted the essential role of collaboration in advancing educational practices between Tanzania and Finland, stressing the need to further enhance the partnership as the GeoICT4e project approaches its conclusion in August this year.
