PCHC, a major health care provider in Bangor, announced on Friday that it has secured federal funding to pay its more than 800 employees and will not be furloughing staff. The agency had previously raised concerns about the lack of access to funding from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, which amounted to $5.6 million annually.
Lori Dwyer, PCHC’s president, had warned that without the funding, up to 25 percent of employees could face furloughs. However, after the announcement of the funds being pending in their account, Ted Varipatis, a spokesperson for PCHC, reassured that patients would be served without interruption.
The news came a few days after the Health Resources and Services Administration informed U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ office that funding was restored, but PCHC had not yet received the money. The agency expressed gratitude to Maine lawmakers for their attention to the issue and emphasized the importance of timely reimbursements and program savings for their survival.
The situation highlighted the vulnerability of PCHC’s financial stability, with Varipatis acknowledging the need to address the cost of delivering care. Despite the challenges faced, PCHC’s ability to secure federal funding will ensure continuity in providing essential health care services to the local community.
