Red Sox sign Alex Bregman to a groundbreaking 3-year, $120 million contract

The Boston Red Sox have made a major free-agent splash by agreeing to a three-year, $120 million contract with infielder Alex Bregman. The deal includes opt-out clauses after the first and second seasons and deferred money. Bregman, the top free agent on the market, is expected to play second base for Boston alongside Rafael Devers at third base. The move reunites Bregman with manager Alex Cora, who coached him during his time with the Houston Astros in 2017.

Despite receiving larger offers, Bregman chose the Red Sox for a shorter deal with a higher average annual value. The addition of Bregman complicates the future of top prospect Kristian Campbell but adds a proven right-handed bat to the Red Sox lineup. Cora has expressed confidence in Bregman’s abilities, suggesting he could excel at second base despite his history at third.

Bregman, the second overall pick in the 2015 draft, brings a strong offensive and defensive skill set to the Red Sox. He has a .272 average with 191 home runs, 663 RBIs, and an .848 OPS over his nine-year career. Bregman has also been a Gold Glover at third base and has two World Series titles to his name.

The signing of Bregman caps off a busy offseason for the Red Sox, who have also made moves to strengthen their pitching staff. The team’s chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, has shown a willingness to make creative decisions to improve the roster. With Bregman in the mix, the Red Sox are looking to compete for another championship in the upcoming season.
