UMaine men’s hockey dominates in third period to take down rival UNH

The University of Maine hockey team broke out of a goal-scoring slump in a big way on Saturday night, scoring four goals in the third period to defeat archrival New Hampshire 5-2 at a soldout Alfond Arena. The Black Bears had struggled to score more than three goals in a game since December, but sophomore Charlie Russell, sophomore Sully Scholle, junior Thomas Freel, and sophomore Josh Nadeau all found the back of the net in the decisive third period.

UMaine improved to 19-5-5 overall and 11-3-5 in Hockey East with the win, while UNH fell to 11-13-4 and 3-12-3. Goaltender Albin Boija made 22 saves for Maine, while Jared Whale had 28 stops for UNH.

The victory was much-needed for UMaine, with players like Russell, Freel, and Nadeau ending goal droughts to secure the win. The Black Bears had been battling for goals in recent games but finally capitalized on their chances.

Despite UNH taking a brief lead in the second period, UMaine responded with goals from Brandon Holt and the determined performance in the third period. The team’s ability to come back and score four goals in a short span showcased their resilience and offensive firepower.

UMaine will look to carry this momentum forward as they continue their season in Hockey East.
