Japan and Tanzania have collaborated to establish the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Agricultural Hub at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro. The aim of this partnership is to enhance skills in irrigation agriculture and improve food production through knowledge exchange and research. Japan’s Ambassador to Tanzania highlighted that the hub will facilitate skills transfer in irrigation agriculture, leveraging Japan’s advanced technology and expertise to benefit Tanzanian farmers.
The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology views the hub as crucial for advancing irrigation technologies and increasing crop yields in Tanzania. With access to modern irrigation technologies, the country can boost food production, create jobs, and achieve food security, with surplus produce potentially being exported. The SUA deputy vice chancellor emphasized the university’s mission to train agricultural engineers and how the JICA Agricultural Hub will support this goal by providing opportunities for students and researchers to deepen their expertise in irrigation technologies.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s target to expand irrigation agriculture to cover 50% of the country’s agricultural land by 2030 aligns with the government’s goal of establishing eight million hectares dedicated to irrigation. The collaboration between Japan and Tanzania will train agricultural engineers to lead efforts in improving food security, water management, and addressing climate change challenges. The JICA Agricultural Hub’s focus on research, training, and technology transfer will be vital in Tanzania’s agricultural development and adaptation to changing environmental conditions.
