Maine experiences yet another earthquake

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Maine, centered 21 miles northwest of Millinocket. The earthquake was felt by four people and was much less impactful than the 3.8 magnitude quake that occurred last month. Maine typically does not experience strong earthquakes, with most being too small to be felt. The largest earthquake recorded in Maine was a magnitude 5.7 in 1904. The last earthquake centered in Maine with a magnitude of 4.0 or greater occurred in October 2012. Despite the rare occurrence of significant earthquakes in the state, Maine remains a quiet tectonic area. State Geologist Ryan Gordon emphasized that microquakes with a magnitude of less than 2.0 are not uncommon. The recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic activity in the region. While the impact of the earthquake was minimal, it highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and preparedness for potential future events. Maine residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions in the event of future seismic activity.
