Maine Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher announced his retirement from his post after serving since 2012. Governor Janet Mills praised Keliher for his leadership and advocacy for Maine’s commercial fisheries and marine industries. Keliher expressed gratitude for the hard work of his staff and the lasting friendships he made during his tenure.
Prior to serving as commissioner, Keliher worked as a registered Maine hunting guide and charter boat captain. He also held leadership positions in various marine organizations. President Barack Obama appointed him as the nonfederal commissioner of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization in 2014.
Mills will appoint an acting commissioner for the department before Keliher’s departure, with a permanent commissioner subject to confirmation by the Maine Senate. Keliher’s retirement marks the end of his 14-year tenure addressing key issues in Maine’s marine sector.
“Maine’s commercial fisheries and seafood industries, our marine environment, our working waterfronts, and our coastal communities are better today because of Pat’s relentless advocacy for Maine,” Mills said. Keliher’s retirement will leave a lasting impact on the Department of Marine Resources and the marine industry in Maine.
