Trump administration fires U.S. attorney for Maine

Maine’s U.S. Attorney, Darcie McElwee, has been terminated by the Trump administration, her office announced on Monday. McElwee, who has been serving as Maine’s lead prosecutor in the U.S. District Court since 2021, was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate. She has worked in Maine’s U.S. Attorney’s Office for nearly 20 years before taking over as the lead prosecutor.

McElwee expressed her gratitude for the support and dedication of her colleagues and law enforcement partners during her tenure. She served on U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s advisory committee and was involved in various subcommittees dealing with issues such as terrorism, national security, and civil rights.

Career prosecutor Craig Wolff, who served as McElwee’s first assistant U.S. attorney, is now taking over the top job on an acting basis. The Trump administration will eventually nominate a permanent replacement for the office, who will have to be confirmed by the Senate.

McElwee, a Caribou native, has a background in law and previously worked as an adjunct professor at the University of Maine School of Law. U.S. Sen. Susan Collins praised McElwee for her service, stating that she has dedicated her career to upholding the law and advocating for victims of crime.

The termination of McElwee comes as a surprise and raises questions about the future direction of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maine under new leadership. It remains to be seen who the Trump administration will nominate as a permanent replacement for the position.
