The Bangor Mall owner, Namdar Realty Group, is attempting to evict Angel Connection, a spiritual-based gift shop owned by Melissa Gabriel, after Gabriel withheld rent for months due to ongoing issues with the property including lack of heat, leaking ceiling, and incorrect electricity bills. Namdar claims that Angel Connection owes over $47,000 in back rent and electricity. The potential eviction comes as the struggling mall, which is less than 50 percent occupied, faces lawsuits from the city of Bangor over code violations such as a leaking roof and inadequate maintenance. Despite several requests for repairs, Gabriel claims that Namdar has not addressed the issues, leading her to withhold rent. A court hearing for the eviction is scheduled for Monday.
Gabriel has also listed her store for sale for $55,000 on Facebook Marketplace, including all inventory and equipment. If the store does not sell, it will close by the end of the month. If Namdar wins the eviction case and Gabriel is forced to pay the $47,000, she says she will have to declare bankruptcy. She expressed disappointment in Namdar’s lack of effort in maintaining the property and addressing issues since she opened Angel Connection in the mall in 2022. The situation highlights the challenges faced by small businesses in struggling malls and the importance of landlords addressing maintenance concerns promptly.
