Massabesic clinches victory at girls wrestling state championship


Massabesic High School’s girls wrestling team took home the team championship at the Maine State Girls Wrestling Championship on Tuesday. Led by sisters Nevaeh and Sophie Grunhuvd, who won individual titles in their weight classes, the Mustangs scored 127.5 points to secure the victory. Nevaeh defeated Kylie Biter of Oxford Hills with a second-period pin, while Sophie beat Maxine Spencer of Erskine Academy with a chicken wing maneuver. Mt. Blue High School put up a good fight, with two individual champions including freshman Kaydn Hansen and junior Brooklynn Webber. Belfast High School also had a champion in sophomore Zady Paige. Noble High School had repeat champions in Hannah Perro and Delaney Frost, with Perro named as the meet’s outstanding wrestler.

The tournament saw a record number of 105 wrestlers participating, showcasing the growth and popularity of girls wrestling in the state. Head coach Joe Eon expressed his pride in his team’s performance and hard work leading up to the championship. The Mustangs had been working all season for this moment, and their dedication paid off with a well-deserved win. The competition was intense, with each wrestler giving their all on the mat. As the sport continues to grow, coaches and participants are excited for the future of girls wrestling in Maine.
