A new poll conducted in Maine shows a sharp divide among voters regarding President Donald Trump’s performance one month into his second administration. The survey found that 98% of Republicans support Trump, while only 1% of Democrats agree. Among unenrolled voters, 36% approved of his performance, resulting in an overall approval rating of 45% in Maine.
The study also revealed that Mainers are more optimistic about the country’s direction since Trump’s inauguration, especially among Republicans. Reasons cited for supporting Trump included reducing spending, keeping campaign promises, and handling immigration. However, a majority of those surveyed believe Elon Musk’s role in the administration is inappropriate, with most Democrats and independents expressing disapproval.
Opinions were split along party lines regarding Trump’s pardoning of participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. While 84% of Republicans approved of the pardons, only 38% of independents and 2% of Democrats agreed. On the other hand, approval ratings for Joe Biden’s pardoning of his son Hunter were higher among Democrats and independents than among Republicans.
Support for Trump’s executive orders varied widely, with more approval for releasing records related to historical assassinations than for renaming the Gulf of Mexico. The survey included responses from 855 Mainers and was conducted in mid-February, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. Overall, the poll highlights the deep political divide in Maine among supporters and critics of the current administration.
