Report: Primary suspect in Israel leak scandal attempted to shape public opinion on hostage exchange agreement

The Israeli media has reported that Eli Feldstein, a spokesman who worked with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is the main suspect in security leaks involving classified documents. Feldstein is accused of stealing and leaking these documents to influence public opinion on a hostage swap deal with Palestinians. He allegedly obtained the documents from two Israeli army officers who are currently under arrest. The leaked documents were intended to sway public opinion on the prisoner swap deal after the death of six Israeli hostages triggered protests against Netanyahu’s government.

Investigations revealed that Feldstein used an intermediary to leak the documents to foreign media outlets after facing difficulties with local media due to military censorship. Charges against him include publishing highly confidential documents unlawfully to manipulate public opinion. The leaked documents aimed to shift the blame onto slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar for sabotaging the potential deal and holding him responsible for the hostages’ deaths.

The Israeli security agency, Shin Bet, conducted an investigation into the leak of classified documents to a German newspaper following the hostage deaths. Hamas had previously accused Netanyahu of sabotaging efforts to reach a deal for a hostage swap and cease-fire. An indictment against Feldstein is expected to be filed by Thursday in connection with the security leaks.
