Maine State Police and the Maine Attorney General’s Office have concluded their investigation into the December 2023 homicides of a mother and daughter in Farmington. The suspect, 56-year-old William Cumming Jr., who was related to both victims, was found dead at his Bar Harbor home from an apparent suicide before charges could be filed. The victims, 76-year-old Jean Robinson and her daughter, 53-year-old Allison “Joy” Cumming, were found dead at Pawsitive Dog Kennel on Red Schoolhouse Road, where they both worked. Autopsies revealed that both women died from sharp force injuries, and their deaths were ruled homicides. William Cumming Sr., who is the husband of Jean and father of Joy, called 911 to report his son’s death days after the initial discovery.
Forensic testing confirmed probable cause to charge Cumming Jr. with the murders of his mother and sister had he survived. The tragic incident has left the Farmington community in shock and mourning as they come to terms with the loss of two beloved members of the community. The investigation serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help in times of crisis. The authorities have extended their condolences to the family and friends of the victims and have urged anyone experiencing domestic violence to reach out for support.
