Increasing Number of Maine Girls Joining Wrestling as Push Grows for Varsity Teams

Belfast Athletic Director Susan Robbins is leading the charge to recognize and support girls’ wrestling as a team sport in Maine. Despite the sport’s popularity nationwide, it is not yet a varsity sport in Maine. Robbins is pushing for the Maine Principal’s Association to make girls’ wrestling an official sport with a minimum of 10 schools forming girls’ teams. This move would provide more opportunities for girls to compete at the collegiate level and beyond. Currently, wrestling teams in the state are co-ed, but efforts are being made to create separate divisions for girls.

Robbins’s proposal has already seen success with four all-girl exhibitions this season, with 40-50 girls participating from schools like Calais, Skowhegan, and Gardiner. The interest in girls’ wrestling is growing rapidly, with more girls joining wrestling teams at the middle school level. Coaches like Tony Gilmore are excited about the potential for girls’ wrestling to become its own separate sport, providing more opportunities for girls to compete in girls-only tournaments.

With the goal of creating positive impacts on girls’ lives and providing more opportunities for girls in sports, educators and coaches across the state are working together to make this a reality. The future looks bright for girls’ wrestling in Maine as efforts continue to establish it as an official team sport.
