Waterville board gives green light for development of 40 new housing units

The Waterville Planning Board has approved two housing developments in the city that will bring a total of 40 new units to the area. One project by Mammie’s Dreams LLC will include 12 condominium units on Evergreen Drive, while the other by 15 Washington LLC will feature 28 apartments on Washington Street. Residents near the Evergreen Drive site have expressed concerns about drainage, increased traffic, and excavation work that could involve blasting. They worry about the impact on the quiet neighborhood where older people and children live. The narrow street already sees parked cars on both sides, potentially hindering emergency vehicles. Despite these concerns, the Planning Board approved the project by a vote of 4-1, with one member dissenting. Another condition for approval was to regrade and deepen a roadside ditch before excavation begins. For the 15 Washington LLC development, residents noted improvements but still worry about increased traffic. The developer has agreed to add a 6-foot-tall fence and plant trees to reduce the impact on neighbors. While some residents expressed regret over the developments, citing safety and environmental concerns, the Planning Board must follow city ordinance guidelines when considering these projects. Community meetings and updates will be held during construction to address any concerns that may arise.
