Blind and Deaf Runner from Maine Completes Six World Marathons

Dennis Lavoie of Madawaska recently achieved a remarkable feat, earning the prestigious Six Star Medal for completing six of the world’s major marathons. Lavoie, who retired early due to declining vision from Usher Syndrome Type 2, decided to take up running as a way to stay active and defy the limitations of his condition.

Despite being legally blind and deaf, Lavoie has persevered through challenges and obstacles to reach his goal. His journey began in 2019 when he retired at the age of 56, and after years of dedication and hard work, he completed his final marathon in Tokyo earlier this month.

Lavoie’s inspiring story has caught the attention of many, as he may be the first individual who is both blind and deaf to win the Six Star Medal. While the Abbott World Marathon Majors does not track disabilities, Lavoie believes he holds a unique distinction among the small number of medal recipients worldwide.

Reflecting on his journey, Lavoie credits his faith and determination for his success. Running has not only been a physical challenge but a spiritual experience that has helped him grow personally and connect with a higher power.

With his achievement, Lavoie joins an elite group of athletes, including the iconic Joan Benoit Samuelson of Maine. Despite his physical limitations, Lavoie’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength that can emerge from adversity.
