University of Maine Athletics claims Hockey East Championship!


The University of Maine men’s hockey team secured their sixth Hockey East Tournament title with a 5-2 victory over UConn at TD Garden. The Black Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first period, with goals from Lynden Breen and Josh Nadeau. Harrison Scott extended the lead to 3-0 before UConn scored their first goal in the third period. Taylor Makar added two more goals for Maine, with an empty-net goal sealing the win. Albin Boija made 27 saves in the victory, moving to 22-7-5 on the year. This win marked Maine’s sixth Hockey East Tournament title, making them the first team not from Massachusetts to win since 2004. The Black Bears will now await their seeding and regional location for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. This victory marks the team’s first conference title game appearance since 2012 and their 15th overall. The Black Bears have a 60-48 all-time record in the Hockey East Tournament, with a 6-9 record in championship games. The tournament MVP was awarded to Albin Boija, and Maine is set to learn their NCAA Tournament fate during Sunday’s selection show on ESPNU.
