Over 10,000 Mainers lose power on Easter

More than 10,000 customers across Maine experienced power outages on Easter Sunday due to gusty winds. The most affected counties were Penobscot, Aroostook, Hancock, Washington, and Piscataquis. Versant Power reported 9,931 outages at the peak, with Central Maine Power reporting another 2,644. Penobscot County had the highest number of outages, followed by Aroostook, Washington, Hancock, and Piscataquis counties. Smaller outages were reported in other counties as well. By 7:30 p.m., the total number of outages statewide had fallen below 8,000.

Officials warned of a high risk for fires due to the windy and dry weather in Maine on Sunday. Both Versant Power and Central Maine Power had crews on standby to respond to the outages in various communities across the state. While power was eventually restored to most customers, the event highlighted the vulnerability of Maine’s power grid in the face of extreme weather conditions. Customers were urged to report any outages and stay safe during the period of service restoration.
