Press Article: Skowhegan River Hawks Show Resilience in Thrilling Softball Victory
OAKLAND — The Skowhegan softball team is making waves this season, proving that age is just a number as they field one of their youngest squads yet. Just two games into the season, the River Hawks showcased their talent and tenacity, overcoming a deficit to secure an exhilarating 8-7 victory against Class A North rival Messalonskee on Tuesday.
Junior Lydia Jones led the charge for Skowhegan, going 2 for 3 with three RBIs, supported by solid performances from teammates Ryleigh Carey and Natalie Cooke, who each contributed two hits. “It’s good we were able to come back and battle through it,” said Jones, emphasizing the team’s effort and determination amid their inexperience.
The game took an early turn when Skowhegan found themselves down 5-0 by the second inning, thanks to RBI singles from Messalonskee’s Sierra Kingsburgy and Olivia Thomas. However, the River Hawks responded remarkably, scoring five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Jones.
Coach Lee Johnson praised his team for their resilience: “I’m just asking them to compete. We could have easily hung our heads, but we found a way to contribute.” In a pivotal fifth inning, Skowhegan took an 8-5 lead, with crucial hits from Jones and Carey, despite Messalonskee’s Chloe Michaud rallying with a two-run single to keep the pressure on.
Following the game, Coach Johnson showed his youthful spirit by celebrating the win with “The Griddy” alongside his players, marking a memorable moment for the team.
Skowhegan (2-0) is set to face Mt. Ararat on Wednesday, while Messalonskee will take on Oxford Hills.
