Investigation Unveils Hazing Allegations in Mt. Ararat Hockey Team
Topsham, ME – A recent investigation into hazing and bullying allegations within the Mt. Ararat High School boys hockey team has uncovered a disturbing pattern of misconduct, prompting major concerns among school officials and the community.
The two-page executive summary, released Tuesday, clarifies that at least four players experienced what has been described as “unjustified physical aggression and intimidation,” as well as “sexually inappropriate conduct.” Following initial reports of incidents during a bus ride home from an away game and in the locker room, Superintendent Heidi O’Leary commissioned the Lewiston law firm Brann & Isaacson for a comprehensive inquiry.
Although the full report remains confidential, the findings indicate a significant culture of humiliation among team members, with interviews revealing behaviors like homophobic language, nudity-induced intimidation, and other demeaning actions. O’Leary emphasized that the individuals involved are still minors and urged for a compassionate understanding of the situation.
In the fallout, two senior players, along with head coach A.J. Kavanaugh and assistant coach Todd Ridlon, were suspended during the investigation. This resulted in the hiring of Erik Baker as interim coach as the team’s season faced turmoil, including a postponed game.
As tensions escalated over supporters’ actions during the team’s senior night, which included wearing shirts and stickers in solidarity with a suspended player, the situation culminated in the cancellation of the remaining season due to a highly charged atmosphere.
Despite the investigation’s expansive revelations, no specific penalties or policy changes have been proposed. Due to a forfeited game linked to these incidents, the team is currently facing a two-year suspension by the Maine Principals’ Association, which they have appealed.
