Justice Department Sues Maine Over Transgender Athlete Policies

The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated a lawsuit against the state of Maine, following claims that it is in violation of Title IX by allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls’ and women’s sports. The lawsuit comes amid a broader conflict between Maine’s Democratic leadership and the Trump administration over policies regarding transgender athletes.
Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey confirmed the lawsuit’s filing, emphasizing the state’s commitment to compliance with federal laws that prohibit sex-based discrimination in educational programs. The controversy escalated when President Trump’s administration threatened to cut federal funding for nutrition programs benefiting school children in Maine unless the state enacted a ban on transgender athletes.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) had agreed to avoid withdrawing about $3 million in federal funds allocated for school nutrition after a federal court issued a temporary restraining order against such actions. Frey welcomed the settlement, stating that it ensures Maine can continue facilitating essential services for children and at-risk adults.
However, the USDA settlement does not resolve the ongoing legal battle concerning Title IX. The U.S. Department of Education has also launched proceedings that could cut off approximately $250 million in annual federal education funding to Maine due to the state’s policies on transgender athletes.
The conflict highlights a significant political clash, exemplified by an incident earlier this year where Trump threatened to withhold funds during a meeting with governors. Maine’s Governor Janet Mills stood firm against the administration’s demands, asserting the state’s commitment to legal principles.
