Headline: Former Maine Governor Paul LePage Launches Bid for U.S. House of Representatives
HERMONG, ME — Former two-term Governor Paul LePage has officially filed to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, marking his return to politics after a defeat in the 2022 gubernatorial election. LePage submitted his candidacy paperwork with the Federal Election Commission late Sunday.
LePage, who served as governor from 2011 to 2019 before being term-limited, initially made headlines for his divisive political style and controversial remarks. After a challenging gubernatorial race against Democratic Governor Janet Mills, which he lost by 13 percentage points, LePage shifted his focus to the congressional race now held by Democratic Rep. Jared Golden.
Golden, who recently secured his fourth term in a district that largely supported Donald Trump in the previous election, is seen as a formidable opponent. Republicans view the 2nd District as a key opportunity for a pickup in the upcoming 2026 elections.
The 76-year-old LePage, a native of Lewiston, has a long history in Maine politics, having previously served as the mayor of Waterville. Throughout his gubernatorial tenure, he was known for significant policy changes, including reductions in income taxes and welfare rolls, as well as efforts to ease business regulations. His administration faced backlash over his comments and confrontations with various groups, including Democrats and media outlets.
After his gubernatorial term, LePage briefly moved to Florida but returned to Maine, establishing residency in Edgecomb before his latest campaign announcement. Political analysts are closely watching his bid as he aims to reestablish himself in the state’s electoral landscape. Updates on LePage’s campaign will follow as the election approaches.
