In Portland Debut, Hearts of Pine Shine as a Promising Win for Maine

Portland’s Hearts of Pine Make Historic Debut at Fitzpatrick Stadium

Portland, ME — The rain began to pour just before kickoff at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Sunday, April 9, but it did not dampen the spirits of soccer fans as the Portland Hearts of Pine launched their inaugural match at home. With every one of the stadium’s 5,500 seats sold out, Donald Thibodeau, co-chair of the team’s support group Dirigo United, declared, “If it’s not raining, we’re not playing; this is a celebration.”

The Hearts of Pine, the fourth professional sports team in Portland, faced off against Knoxville SC in a USL League One match, ending in a 1-1 draw. This event marks the beginning of a 17-game season at Fitzpatrick Stadium, where hopes remain high for continued sellouts. By the end of March, over 90% of the season tickets were already purchased, showcasing Portland’s vibrant soccer culture.

Enhanced stadium features include new artificial turf, padded seating, and a beer garden, making Fitzpatrick Stadium a contemporary venue for soccer fans. Among the notable attendees was Governor Janet Mills, who joined the crowd in cheering and playfully engaged with players on the field.

Dirigo Union, the passionate supporters’ group, created an electrifying atmosphere with drums and flags, boasting 465 paying members. Their commitment is further amplified by the recent signing of Khalid Hersi, the first Mainer on the roster, representing the growing soccer landscape spurred by an influx of new Mainers.

As the community unites in support of their team, hopes are high for the Hearts of Pine to solidify their place in Portland’s rich sports tradition.
