Coalition of State Attorneys General Sue Trump Over Wind Energy Order
A coalition of 17 state attorneys general and Washington, D.C., has initiated a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, challenging his executive order that halts the approval of all wind energy projects. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Massachusetts, argues that Trump lacks the authority to unilaterally pause necessary permits and approvals vital for the development of wind energy—a renewable source critical to economic growth, public health, and climate objectives across these states.
Leading the coalition, New York Attorney General Letitia James emphasized the order’s potential to expand reliance on fossil fuels and harm public health. "This arbitrary and unnecessary directive threatens the loss of thousands of good-paying jobs and billions in investments," she stated, urging the court to reverse the order and protect the clean energy transition.
In response, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers accused the Democratic coalition of engaging in "lawfare" by obstructing Trump’s energy agenda, which he claims aims to restore American energy dominance while reducing costs for families.
Trump’s order, issued on his first day in office, raises concerns about the legality of the federal government’s wind leasing procedures and directly contradicts the Biden administration’s climate initiatives that support large-scale offshore wind farms. States have already invested millions in wind energy development, hoping to shift towards renewable sources, especially along densely populated East Coast regions.
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell noted that the state’s commitment to offshore wind not only aims to provide green jobs but also to ensure affordable energy for residents as the nation grapples with climate challenges. The lawsuit indicates a significant confrontation over energy policy, as an increasing number of states prioritize renewable sources like wind power amid a changing political landscape.
