Man Accused of Illegal Lobstering Operations in New Hampshire
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Rodney Genther, a man from Friendship, Maine, is facing multiple charges for illegal lobstering activities after allegedly relocating his operations to New Hampshire. This move comes on the heels of recent suspensions and convictions in his home state.
On April 23, New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) conservation officers boarded Genther’s lobster boat, "For the Win," following a month-long surveillance. The authorities discovered that the vessel was unlicensed and lacked the necessary equipment to fish in federal waters and to harvest marine landings legally.
Genther is accused of violating several state and federal regulations, including the possession of v-notched female lobsters—marked breeding females—and short lobsters. Further allegations include dumping fish in state harbors, possessing protected species such as wolf fish, and failing to operate a vessel monitoring system, a requirement for federally permitted vessels.
The NHFG highlighted the critical concern of unsustainable fishing practices, stating that species unlawfully removed from the ecosystem jeopardize the health and renewal of marine populations.
