TSA to Enforce Real ID Requirements Amid Concerns Over Compliance in Maine
AUGUSTA, ME — Starting Wednesday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin enforcing Real ID requirements, necessitating that all travelers over 18 present a compliant form of identification—such as a Real ID or passport—when flying. However, a phased enforcement strategy may allow non-compliant individuals to fly temporarily, easing concerns regarding potential travel disruptions.
Maine officials have expressed worries about the state’s low compliance rate, with only 29% of residents having obtained a Real ID as of May 1. This number is a slight increase from April, positioning Maine among the states with the lowest uptake nationally. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, along with bipartisan lawmakers, had previously appealed to the TSA for a more gradual implementation, urging them to prevent travelers from being turned away without adequate warning.
While the TSA has sent warning notices explaining the procedures for travelers without Real ID, including a QR code to access relevant information, the agency emphasizes that travel will still be permitted. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that those lacking appropriate identification may face extra screenings but will still be allowed to proceed with their flights.
Bellows welcomed this news, stressing the importance of Mainers booking appointments at local Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices to secure their Real IDs. She urged residents to visit TSA.gov for further assistance.
The Real ID program, initiated in response to the 9/11 attacks, mandates stricter verification standards for identity documents. For those without Real ID, additional security measures will be in place, including identity verification processes.
As the TSA ramps up Real ID compliance, the agency will continue to facilitate a smoother transition for travelers while ensuring enhanced security measures in U.S. air travel.
