Angus King III Announces Candidacy for Maine Governor

AUGUSTA, Maine — Angus King III, the son of U.S. Senator Angus King, has officially launched his campaign for the 2026 gubernatorial election in Maine. Unlike his father, who is an independent, King is entering the race as a Democrat.

Describing himself as an affordable housing developer, King has also worked extensively in renewable energy sectors, including wind and solar. In a recent statement, he emphasized his commitment to building a better Maine, focusing on creating an environment conducive to small business growth and addressing the challenges of affordability for families. “I’ve spent my life building and making things that really help people,” he stated.

King, who founded Peaks Renewables—a company that produces natural gas through recycling manure from dairy farms—brings an innovative approach to his campaign. He believes that fostering an economy rooted in hard work and innovation is essential for the state’s future.

He is the second Democrat to announce his candidacy, following Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. Bobby Charles is currently the only Republican candidate in the race.

Born in Skowhegan and residing in Portland with his wife and two children, King received support from his father during the announcement. Senator King, who served as governor from 1995 to 2003, humorously highlighted their shared name, expressing confidence in his son’s capabilities as a future governor. “He’s been building things to take care of people and make the world a better place,” said Sen. King, praising Angus III’s mix of intelligence, experience, and character.

With a rich family legacy in Maine politics, Angus King III seeks to continue his family’s service to the state while positioning himself as a fresh voice in Democratic leadership.
